Garage Door Opener Repair

Openers that hum, reverse, blink or quit, diagnosed by trained technicians.

More than an annoyance: the symptoms that matter

A malfunctioning garage door opener is more than an annoyance; it can be downright unsafe. A door that will not reverse when it meets an obstruction, or one that closes while someone is still in its path, is a hazard for kids, pets and cars, not just a nuisance.

The symptoms are usually easy to recognize. The motor hums but nothing moves, which often points to a stripped drive gear. The door reverses before it touches the floor, a sign of a misaligned photo-eye or a force setting that is too tight. The lights blink, or the remote works only when you stand in the garage.

Another common one: the opener runs, the trolley travels, and the door stays put. That usually means the trolley has been released. Call (309) 357-3907 and describe what you see and hear, and we will tell you what to check, whether you are in Peoria, Dunlap or Germantown Hills.

Why we check the door before we blame the opener

A heavy or out-of-balance door is a common cause of early opener failure, so the first check is the door itself. Disconnected from the opener, it should lift by hand and stay put at mid-travel. If the springs are tired, a new opener only gives you a new motor that will fail the same way.

With the door sorted, our trained technicians work through the opener: sensors and wiring, the logic board, the drive gear and sprocket, the trolley and the travel limits. Photo-eyes get cleaned and realigned, loose wires get traced, and worn drive parts are replaced where it makes sense.

Sometimes repair is the right call, and sometimes it is not. If the board and motor are failing on an old unit, we say so and walk you through replacement options. You decide after hearing what is wrong and what each path involves, in Pekin, East Peoria, Washington or Metamora alike.

The test that happens before we pack up

Every opener visit ends with the same two tests. We run the auto-reverse against an obstruction on the floor, and we block the photo-eye beam to confirm the door stops and goes back up. If either one fails, the job is not finished, and we keep working until both pass.

That routine comes from a simple view of the work. Tri-County Door Doctor is a local, family-owned shop founded in 2015 by Chip Wilmot and based in Germantown Hills, and an opener that closes on a bumper or a child's bike is not a repair we want our name on.

Warranties are available on our work, so ask about them when you call. We are on the phone Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with weekends by appointment, and a call-back request sent through the contact page is answered the same business day.
